The CBC recently reported on a number of volunteer firefighters who were not reporting to work, but instead volunteering to fight wildfires in their communities.

Seriously, volunteer firefighters never cease to impress us. Even the mayor of Musgrave Harbour, NL is missing work to fight a wildfire. And one of his constituents missed flying to Saskatchewan for work so he could stay and do the same thing.

As you read the article, the list of people making big sacrifices in work schedules (but hopefully not taking job risks) is remarkable.

The report suggests that one of the problems leading to this need is the lack of regional governments. Hopefully this can be addressed, as we face increasing wildfires during global climate changes – after the fires are out.

Kudos to these volunteers for their commitment and work.
