NFPA Concerned About Deregulation Trend

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is concerned about a U.S. trend toward deregulation that is seeing a weakening of the fire and life-safety Codes and Standards intended to protect the public.

This trend, according to NFPA, is being driven by money and politics as elected officials ‘hijack’ the code-making process using their legislative powers, thereby side-stepping the traditional reliance on subject-matter experts.

The politicians are being pressured by special interest groups who have discovered that given the superior authority of legislation over codes and standards, lobbying for legislative change is an easier way to reduce the burden of the “existing safety rules they find burdensome.”

With governments across Canada increasingly calling for the reduction of ‘red tape’ bureaucracy, especially in solving the need for more housing, it is an important question whether such a trend does or will happen in Canada. You can read the full article here: Safety Under Assault
