NFPA Draws Attention to the Problem of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Last Updated: 11 July 2025By Tags: ,

When it comes to the problem of fire involving lithium-ion batteries, one senior researcher at the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Protection Research Foundation believes that, “Every time you think you might have a strategy that solves one problem you’re creating another seven problems.”

The convenience of battery power combined with technological advances and the trend away from fossil fuels means that batteries are an increasing part of our everyday life, in part because batteries are getting better. The battery technology of choice right now is lithium-ion – complete with its “confounding array of complex threats.”

The effect on firefighting is “strategies on the fly,” and “a sometimes dangerous game of trial and error.”

The NFPA Standards Council has proposed a new code, tentatively called NFPA 800, Batter Safety Code, and a First Draft Development Meeting was scheduled for May 6, 2025.
